These quick and easy dumpling recipe is from our 1968 vintage 125th Anniversary cookbook. Southern, sweet and simply scrumptious, these soft dumplings are desserts to be savored. Serve warm and sprinkle with chopped pecans, homemade vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

*Spoon & Sweep method: Use a spoon to fill measuring cup with flour until required amount is obtained. Scooping measuring cup directly into flour bag will firmly pack flour resulting in too much flour required for recipe.


  1. Caramelize 1/2 cup sugar by melting slowly in heavy pan over low heat, stirring with a wooden spoon until it becomes brown in color. 
  2. Add boiling water, 1 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons butter; boil 10 minutes, add vanilla and salt. Remove from heat.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream 1/2 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon soft butter. Add milk, baking powder, and flour, mixing into stiff batter. 
  4. Coat an 8x8-inch baking pan with butter or non-stick cooking spray. Pour caramel into pan. Drop batter by large spoonfuls into caramel mixture. 
  5. Bake at 400°F for 15 minutes. Serve warm, with ice cream or whipped cream if desired. Sprinkle with chopped pecans.
