Paper Pilgrim Bonnet
Paper Pilgrim Hat

These pilgrim hats and bonnets are a simple Thanksgiving craft for little ones. Kids will love to wear these homemade toppers to celebrate the fall harvest.

Leave the pieces and instructions at the table for children to make during the holiday meal. To make it easier for small children, you can pre-trace the paper and leave it for the children to cut out and assemble. Either way, this craft will make all of the little pilgrims happy and feeling festive for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Pilgrim Bonnets:

  • 11”x 17”inch white construction paper
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • sugar glue (recipe follows)
  • hole punch
  • ribbon

Bonnet Directions:

  1. Hold the paper horizontally. Fold one edge 1 inch down to make a cuff. This will be the front of the bonnet. Glue edge down with sugar glue.
  2. To make the back, mark a dot every 5 1/2 inches. Make a three-inch cut at those markings. Fold the outer pieces in and fold the middle piece down to make a flap over the back.
  3. Use a hole punch to make a hole on each side to thread ribbon through to tie the bonnet.

Pilgrim Hats:

  • 11”x 17” inch black construction paper
  • pencil
  • small rectangle cut out of yellow construction paper
  • scissors
  • sugar glue (recipe follows)
  • stapler

Pilgrim Hat Directions:

  1. Trace a hat and band shape onto black construction paper (you can free-form draw this to the size you like). Cut out. Trace buckle onto yellow paper and cut out.
  2. Glue the buckle in the center of the hat. Glue the bands on the inside of the back of the hat.
  3. To wear, pull bands around child?s head, mark with pencil, remove hat and staple shut.

Sugar Glue Recipe:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup Imperial Sugar Extra Fine Granulated Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups water

Mix flour, sugar, water and oil in a pot and stir over low heat until well combined and smooth in texture to make decoupage.
